Pawns

Pawns – that’s what they are
Where is the Pied Piper when you need one?
He grew up knowing nothing but fear
Flight or fight instilled early on in life
Men with guns would come in the dark
Take everything away
Everyday when he wakes up, more goes missing
What kind of future can he have now?

Half a world away, she is ensconced in safety
What does she know about war,
about poverty, about going to bed hungry each night
But she knows this…
she knows how her mother tells her she’s a victim
She hears the shouts, she sees the tears
She feels the indifference.
They think she’s too young,
and they think she’s smart enough to know the truth
But what is the truth?
Does she believe everything her mother tells her?
Or what her father does?
Why is she made to choose?
What kind of future would she have now?
